Hello from Osiris!

Hello from one of the new Sinker regions. We?ve had a lot going on lately in the region! First off, elections concluded and new positions were filled. Since then, though, we?ve had a few changed. Aurora resigned her spot from the Sepatarchy, followed by Alderaan from the Council of Ma?at. Aurora returned and was reappointed to her spot on the Sepatarchy but later resigned when her main nation was deleted. To fill the council spot Lyanna ?Earth22? Stark was chosen by the Sepatarchy and confirmed by the other two Council of Ma?at members as the new Priestess.

We also had some changes in our Viziers! Alderaan, now going as Palidor, recently returned to Osiris to be appointed to the position of Vizier of Internal Affairs and Communication while long-time member Diamete was appointed to the position of Vizier of Foreign Affairs.

Osiris has had some very interesting discussions going on on the forum and on the IRC channel. We?ve discussed real life exams, pages of our member?s pretty (or handsome!) faces in the Member Pictures Thread, and have all been gettin? to know each other. We?ve also had a large Game of Thrones roleplay starting up! Tyrion Lannister, Oberyn Martell, Lyanna Stark, Ned Stark, Benjen Stark, Rhaegar I Targaryen, and Harmen Uller have been seen around the forum.

In the Sepatarchy, a Legal Code has been passed, detailing the crimes and punishments of the region for the Great Kenbet to interpret. Also, the Pan-Sinker Security Pact has been up for discussion with many in the Sepat stating their support of the Pact. A Bill of Rights was discussed, as well as a Law Indexing Act.

In the Great Kenbet, a question was asked by our Kai Repat about when, if necessary, the Kai Repat takes over power from the Delegate. This answered many questions regarding inactivity and the security of the region.

The last few weeks have been a great start for the region of Osiris with a long, peaceful stability already showing under Pharoah Dalimbar. Join us at <a class='bbc_url' href='http://s13.zetaboards.com/Osiris_NS/'>http://s13.zetaboards.com/Osiris_NS/</a>

<em class='bbc'>A note from the Acting Delegate</em>

This missive shall be both my first and last official missive as Acting Delegate of Osiris. Regretfully, the nation Dalimbar, serving as our elected delegate, has ceased to exist, and elections to choose a new delegate have begun; I shall not be running in them. Over the last three weeks, Osiris has been through a great deal. We have suffered through governmental inactivity, steeled ourselves against security threats, and finally set ourselves back on the path towards a prosperous, active region. Despite being propelled unwillingly into the Delegate's seat, I'm proud of what all the people working in this great region have accomplished, and I have great confidence in the region's future.

<em class='bbc'>Emergency Measures Result in New WA Delegate</em>

by: Simparsia

Osiris has a new delegate in the World Assembly: Oliver, our Kai Repat. This change, which is expected to be temporary, stems from a state of emergency that Osiris endured recently.

'Osiris under attack'

Earlier this month, Osiris was faced with the threat of a hostile takeover, in the form of an active swapper attempting to leech endorsements from our unsuspecting citizens. On 15 January, 2012, the invasion attempt was noticed by renowned citizen and Sepatarchy member Tyrion of Biyah. As our Pharaoh and official World Assembly delegate Dalimbar was inexplicably unavailable to deal with the threat, the call was made for a temporary emergency replacement.

"Oliver, as Kai Repat, has full authorization via our governing documents to temporarily replace Dalimbar as the Delegate of Osiris," stated Biyah, who is also the Vizier of Security for Osiris. "I recommend he move into position post-haste, in order to secure the region from all external threats." Once the state of emergency was formally declared, Osirians wasted little time in enacting our emergency protocols, elevating Oliver into the WA "hot-seat", and the threat was neutralized quickly and effectively. The perpetrator, bachman-turner overdrive, was caught and officially banished from Osiris for his coup attempt. In his post-appointment public address, Oliver had this to say:

"While this particular immediate threat has been dealt with, the Vizier of Security has recommended that we remain at a state of readiness". Oliver said he would maintain the delegacy position until the return of Dalimbar, the cessation of Dalimbar to exist within Osiris, or Dalimbar's natural term as delegate comes to an end. "In the first case, I will gladly and readily step aside to welcome him home. In either of the remaining cases, I will begin the process for elections."

It later became known that Dalimbar ceased to exist shortly before press time, and the Kai Repat has held true to his word; notices for election have been placed as of Feb. 2, 2012.

'Others Involved'

As the threat was dealt with, it became apparent that while bachman-turner overdrive was working towards his own agenda, there were others attempting to capitalize on his treachery. Lone Wolf Kurosaki, who is not a citizen of our region, has been banned from obtaining citizenship. Another individual, who is an Osirian citizen, was caught and has been granted a trial (see Ongoing Trials for more information).

Despite the gravity of the situation, the acting-delegate had inspiring and encouraging words to share.

"I have great faith in the citizens of this region, despite the efforts of those who would make trouble for us. We will see Osiris strong through these crises, and we will make our region of a tempered steel. We are strong together, and we will not let others tear us apart."

<em class='bbc'>Osirian Citizen Charged with Treason</em>

by Simparsia

A citizen of Osiris is being brought to trial. The suspect, Tim, has been accused with treason under the Osiris Legal Code, Article 1. On January 23, Siam Meow of the Great Kenbet formally announced the charge, in response to a request for summons lodged by Osirian citizen Hileville. Another individual, Ravenclaw, has been requested for summons, but no decision on that matter has been tendered as of press deadline.

"'Raise Hell'"

In support of the accusation, a transcript was provided of a communication allegedly taking place between Tim and others, such as Lone Wolf Kurosaki, in which a plan was hatched to capitalize on the ongoing state of emergency caused by a concurrent-but-unrelated attempt at a coup. In it, the accused allegedly states this intention to "gain more favor in Osiris", and endorses that the renegades should "raise hell".

In an announcement, acting WA delegate and Kai Repat Oliver stated: "Tim is a citizen of Osiris, and will be afforded a legal trial, but such an act of treason is an undoubted security risk, and for this reason his nation will be ejected and banned from the region until such time as his legal status is confirmed." Regarding the other participants of the conversation, the Kai Repat said, "Kurosaki is not a citizen of Osiris, and will be banned from applying for or obtaining citizenship in the region. Others took part in the conversation, but are not deemed to be security risks at this time."

"'More Active'"

While a date has not yet been set for his trial, Tim has already begun publicly defending his role in the act. "Yes, I partook in the Osiris chat. And yes I told them to '[Expletive Removed] IT UP'. Not meaning this in the grief manner you probably thought," he said in a public statement issued some time ago. "I was taking a bit of a raider thought process towards this. My thought process, at twisted as it may be, was that a raid on Osiris would do what a raid usually does to regions. It makes them more active."

While his stance on his actions has been primarily defensive, Tim did express at least some remorse. "I told them to attempt an Osiris raid, but I had a different outlook on it than them. I should have voiced this earlier and I regret that I didn't?So I'd appreciate if I could still be a citizen here. It's a really nice region and I'd still like to work to increase life here even if I'm not delegate."

Others are skeptical of his remorse, however. "Intentions are meaningless," commented New Kervoskia, from the Council of Ma'at. "Only actions matter. You are a traitor, Tim, and a rather inept one at that." Sepatarchy member and Vizier of Security Tyrion of Biyah agreed. "It's a line of bull[expletive removed]. He wanted the region, he got caught, now he's trying to make it sound defensible... which is laughable at best."

'Aftermath'

Although a court date has not been announced, the trial will happen and citizens of Osiris can expect an update as early as possible. Meanwhile, an added security measure to protect against more coup attempts has been enacted:

"The endorsement cap has been reduced [from 25] to 15." Kai Repat Oliver announced on January 20. "Nations with more than 15 endorsements have five days to reduce their number, before action will be taken. Any nations above 15 endorsements will also be contacted by telegram. This action has been taken under the advisement of the Vizier of Security, due to the recent security concerns."

Two nations. The Eternal Kingdom of August and The Queendom of Hillary Clinton is A Goddess have been already been ejected and temporarily banned from the region for sitting above the endorsement cap and making no effort to reduce their endorsement levels. However, the Kai Repat has stated that the bans were lifted shortly afterward, and that the bans were only employed to ensure that the target nations updated outside Osiris.

<em class='bbc'>Changes in Government</em>

by LemonLove

There has been a lot of changes to the government this month in Osiris. Our pharaoh (delegate), Dalimbar suddenly became inactive and was unresponsive to many attempts to contact him. Thus, in accordance with Osiris' constitution, The Book of the Dead, the Sepatarchy moved for our Kai Repat (vice delegate), Oliver, to become the active pharaoh. With help from allies and nations within Osiris, Oliver was successful transitioned into the delegate position after a few days. Oliver will continue to be Osiris' acting pharaoh until Dalimbar returns or when his elected term has expired.

One of the Sepatarchy, Harm, resigned from her position for real life reasons. In Olver's first acts as delegate, he appointed Sepatarchy positions to Mahaj and Simparsia. He also appointed Hileville to the Attorney General position and Todd McCloud to Vizier of Citzenship and Immigration.

Osiris is currently in a state of stability and we hope our government will continue the great job they are doing!

<em class='bbc'>Dalimbar Ceases to Exist</em>

The Regional Message Board of Osiris is currently dedicated to the wake of the late Pharaoh; flags are flying at half mast across the region. All are invited to join us to celebrate Dalimbar's memory on the regional message board.

The suspect, Tim, was allegedly involved in a plot to "raise hell" in Osiris last month, capitalizing on another, unrelated coup attempt by Bachman-Turner Overdrive. Before any such thing could happen, however, the suspects were apprehended. Not GuiltyThe trial officially began on February 16, 2012 in the Great Kenbet, Osiris' court system. Tim's legal representative, DurkaDurkaIranistan, formally entered the plea of "Not Guilty" to the charge of Treason under Osiris Legal Code, Article 1 that same day. Beyond that, the trial has been rather slow moving, and cross-examination has yet to commence. The plea of "Not Guilty" may be difficult to defend, however, as the suspect admitted his involvement in the plot."Yes, I partook in the Osiris chat. And yes I told them to '[Expletive that rhymes with "duck" Removed] IT UP'. Not meaning this in the grief manner you probably thought," he said some time ago. "I was taking a bit of a raider thought process towards this. My thought process, at twisted as it may be, was that a raid on Osiris would do what a raid usually does to regions. It's a really nice region and I'd still like to work to increase life here even if I'm not delegate."With the question of Tim's involvement being answered definitively, what is left now for the courts is to decide if Tim is indeed guilty of Treason, or just being a raider. The Osirian Papyrus will carry news of the verdict once it is rendered. Meanwhile, another citizen (Ravenclaw) has been named and summoned for trial, however no date has been set or a response given about the trial's status by press date.Free laughslink supplied by Lemon Love.Mummydion's Mummy Jokes.

<strong class='bbc'>Citizens for Osiris Gluttons for <em class='bbc'>PUNishment!</em></strong>

By: Simparsia

Osirians have been counting down the days to the inaugural episode of the hottest new game show to grace their region: <em class='bbc'>PUNishment!</em>

As the name suggests, the game revolves around wordplay, double-entendres and, of course, puns.

<em class='bbc'>Live studio audience</em>

Much like many of the globally recognized game shows in existence, such as Price is Right and Let's Make a Deal, <em class='bbc'>PUNishment!</em> is to be played in front of a live studio audience, and contestants will be selected from their seats. Contestants are picked two at a time, and the two then compete against one another in a war of words, so to speak.

"The show's about being right on the money with your words," said the show's host Bingo Sorvino (otherwise known as Simparsia--shhh!), a man who seems to know a thing or two about fast-talking. "You've got to be able to think quickly, and have a competent vocabulary. Game shows ain't just about winning stuff--they're about expanding your brain and learning stuff."

The rules of the game are fairly uncomplicated; the contestants are given a topic, and they proceed to have a conversation about said topic. The catch is, each phrase given by a contestant must contain at least one pun. The example given by Sorvino was: "The topic could be about cameras, and one contestant might say 'Photography isn't something I've had much EXPOSURE to'". He went on to say that the other contestant would have up to five minutes to come up with a pun-filled reply, and if time run out, they would be declared "stumped" and lose the round. What makes the game harder, however, is that puns are not allowed to be recycled, even if it is in a different context.

<em class='bbc'>Lowest form of humor?</em>

While reception to the game show seems to be warm, the reality of the situation is that people often call puns "the lowest form of humor" and are frowned upon, or groaned at. When asked about this, Sorvino had these words to offer:

"Puns are great. They demonstrate the ability to think quickly on your feet, as well as a highly-developed vocabulary. To participate in a battle of puns, especially when it can become rapid-fire at times, requires a great deal of wit. So all these people who are looking down on puns are only showing one thing: that they're a bunch of yutzes who can't handle the hot-seat--and you can quote me on that!"

The show is set to begin on Friday, March 16th 2012 at 7:30pm EST. Anyone who would like to watch the show first-hand, and possibly compete, can do so by going to Esper.net IRC room #PUNishment on that date at that time.

<strong class='bbc'>Trial for Suspected Traitor in Early Stages...</strong>

by: Simparsia

[spoiler=Click]

Let's face the facts: without the recap of past updates, this would be a really short article.

The trial of Tim has been progressing, but at a virtual snail's pace. In our last report, the defense had entered the plea of Not Guilty on 16 February 2012. There hasn't been much happening since then.

The prosecution, led by Hileville, delivered its opening statements on 20 February 2012. The statement was brief; a definition of treason from the Osiris Legal Code, and how the state believes Tim to be guilty of it.

"Treason is defined in the Osiris Legal Code as "an act that betrays the regional security of Osiris in favor of an outside personality or organization, motivated by the intention to undermine or overthrow the lawful government of Osiris." The prosecution will provide evidence that the defendant committed a betrayal of the regional security of this great region. Tim participated in a conversation in which he encouraged the other participants to "raise hell" and "[expletive removed] Osiris up". [...] The prosecution is seeking a verdict of GUILTY on the charge of committing an act of treason by planning to overthrow the government of the region."

The defense, led by Durkadurkairanistan, made an interesting move by using the same definition of treason in their counter-argument.

"Treason is defined in the Osiris Legal Code as 'an act that betrays the regional security of Osiris in favor of an outside personality or organization, motivated by the intention to undermine or overthrow the lawful government of Osiris.'" said the Defense. "I emphasize 'act'. My client never <em class='bbc'>acted</em> in any sense of the word. My client <em class='bbc'>thought</em> about overthrowing the delegacy of the region, and even <em class='bbc'>discussed</em> the possibility. But at no point did he follow through on any of these conversations; in short he talked of potentially committing a crime but he never actually did commit the crime. This is Osiris, a region that prides itself on its liberalism and liberty; we have no thought police and we shouldn't." He finished his argument with "Raising hell is one thing; treason is another. My client is no traitor." [Emphasis added by journalist]

The prosecution followed up with providing a transcript of the entire discussion as evidence against the accused, and has called its first witness to the stand. The witness, Oliver, was the acting-Pharaoh of the region at the time of the attack. The call to the stand was issued on 27 February 2012 -- it wasn't answered until 3 March 2012. Upon taking the stand, the witness said:

" <em class='bbc'>would have appreciated some sort of heads up that was being called as a witness"</em>, apparently an oversight by the prosecution.

<em class='bbc'>"I'd appreciate if I could still be a citizen here..."</em>

The accused has personally admitted to having the conversation, but maintains that he is not a traitor, and his motives are misunderstood.

"Yes, I partook in the Osiris chat. And yes I told them to '[Expletive that rhymes with "duck" Removed] IT UP'. Not meaning this in the grief manner you probably thought," he said in his own defense. "I was taking a bit of a raider thought process towards this. My thought process, at twisted as it may be, was that a raid on Osiris would do what a raid usually does to regions. It makes them more active." While his stance on his actions has been primarily defensive, Tim did express at least some remorse. "I told them to attempt an Osiris raid, but I had a different outlook on it than them. I should have voiced this earlier and I regret that I didn't?So I'd appreciate if I could still be a citizen here. It's a really nice region and I'd still like to work to increase life here even if I'm not delegate."

The Osirian Papyrus will continue to update as the trial progresses. It is recommended that no one puts their lung capacities to the test for a verdict to be reported just yet--we seem to still have some way to go.[/spoiler]

<img src='http://weeklyworldnews.files.wordpress.com/2009/05/mars_ancient_egypt.jpg' alt='Posted Image' class='bbc_img' />

Spoiler: click to toggleBERN ? Swiss scientists say they can prove beyond a doubt that the Lost City of Atlantis was on Mars, and its astronauts traded with ancient Egypt for thousands of years! Even more incredible, they claim to have the evidence to show that the legendary King Tut died spectacularly in a space shuttle crash with an alien crew.

?The Martian Civilization destroyed itself or was destroyed by a meteor while Egypt was still in its prime,? Dr. Stephan Weisz told a gathering of reporters and scientists in Bern, Switzerland. But the inhabitants left their mark both on Earth and Mars. Top secret photographs taken by America?s Martian probes clearly show the remains of temples on the surface of the planet.

?Egypt?s pyramids and the ability to mummify the human body are definitely the result of technologies that originated not on Earth but someplace else, in this case Mars. It is our belief that the Atlantans traded these technologies to the Egyptians for gold.?

Dr. Weisz and a colleague, Egyptologist Conrad Vetsch, said that a recently deciphered Egyptian scroll first led them to believe that Atlantis was located on Mars. The scroll describes a technologically advanced civilization existing beyond our own planet ?in the vast, black ocean of space.?

It also alludes to space travel and the use of a shuttle craft to ferry manlike extraterrestrials from a space-bound mother ship to the surface of Earth.

?Researchers have long known that the Egyptians were exposed to flight because an elaborate model of what they called a glider was found in Tut?s tomb,? Dr. Weisz told the group. ?In light of information gleaned from the scrolls, we now see that the glider was in fact the replica of a space shuttle. And it was just such a space craft that crashed with Tut aboard.?

Not everyone attending the conference agreed with the experts? theories. Dr. Seth Rausch, a German historian, thinks they went too far in calling the Martian civilization Atlantis. ?I don?t doubt that the Egyptians were in contact with extraterrestrials,? said the expert. ?But until we actually inspect the ruins on Mars, there is no way to know if they are the remains of Atlantis.?

?In my opinion, if Atlantis did exist, it existed here on Earth.?

Norwegian astronomer Elling Gade agreed. ?Atlantis might have been the colony of an alien civilization. But it most definitely was located on this planet,? he said.[/spoiler]
