Guide to NationStates and the South Pacific

Quote:Hey Uni, yep. I will work on this next week or as soon as I can. I'll have a couple of people including you look at it for "neutrality."  I'm sure I'll be adding some of my own commentary Tongue
Unibot is hardly a "neutral" person to edit the article. Tongue If you like I can go over it before it is finalized. Wink

This is an edit of Todd_McCloud's post on Endorsements:

In the final version, I will post two screen captures.

What is endorsing and what do I do with endorsements?(by Todd_McCloud)

Endorsing in a NationStates sense can only be performed by nations that have joined the World Assembly (WA). It is how the delegate is put into power in-game: he or she gains the most endorsements among all the other nations in the region and therefore becomes the delegate.

This is an important thing to note, the nation with the most endorsements in a region becomes the delegate and therefore controls things like: the World Factbook entry, which nations are banned or ejected from the region, suppression of RMB posts, the opening or closing of embassies with other regions, and the ability to create polls and send out mass telegrams.

For example, if you visit the page of a nation that has joined the World Assembly, such as this one, and scroll down you will see a list of nations that have endorsed Brutland and Norden.

How do I endorse someone?

Let's say you're a WA nation and you want to endorse someone.  All you need to do is the following:

Go to the WA nation's page you want to endorse.

Scroll down to the bottom of the page and look for the button that reads 'Add Your Endorsement'.

Click the button.

Really simple stuff. Your nation name should immediately appear in the Endorsements Received list for the nation you just endorsed.

You can only endorse nations in the region you are currently in. So if you move to a different region any endorsements you have received or given will be reset.

Why should I endorse someone?

Usually, the best practice is to endorse the people mentioned in a region’s World Factbook Entry (WFE) on its main page. In the South Pacific this is the delegate and vice-delegate and can also include members of the Committee for State Security. Some other regions also list other members or titles.

Doing this will help with regional security and will show your support for regional government of the South Pacific. How does this help with regional security?

Well, there are nations who will sometimes abuse their level of endorsements in the region and might even try to get more endorsements than the delegate, which could be very harmful for the region. Giving the delegate and the vice-delegate more endorsements makes it harder for those who want to threaten our region to come over and attack it.

It is your choice who you want and do not want to endorse. The South Pacific does not require you to endorse anyone and respects your right to endorse whoever you please.

Can I get endorsements? Are there any limitations?

Of course you can get endorsements. Endorsements are required for submitting W.A. proposals, for instance, so sometimes they're very helpful. They can also affect influence, albeit very, very slowly. But there are limits.

The South Pacific has an Endo Cap where only the delegate, vice delegate, and specific nations in the CSS are entitled to surpass. Passing the endo cap will cause people to get a little nervous, especially about regional security. Nations breaching this number will get a telegram from a concerned nation telling them to get below the endorsement cap or the delegate will be forced to eject them for a 24-hour period (at least).

Normally this telegram will give an ultimatum, like "lower your endorsement count to below 150 in 72 hours or you'll be ejected." Once a nation is ejected, their endorsement count starts at zero and they'll have to start all over again. So, it's cool to gain endos - just make sure you don't gain too much!

So, this is a very much a draft of Military Game Play (text needs a bit more organization\editing and some pictures)

Military Game Play

(edited from posts by Horse and Hobbes)

So, is there any way to simulate war with nations and regions, excluding RP?

Yes, sort of. Welcome to Raiding and Defending or R\D!!!

Both raiders and defenders operate similarly. Groups of nations, at the key time of updates, move their World Assembly nations to different regions.  Raiders try to take over (their reasons include shutting down various hate groups such as Nazis or  trolling and\or griefing) whereas defenders attempt to stop a takeover of regions or try to restore regions to their original community.

In the majority of raiding and defending missions, the key is to take over the delegacy of a region and this is where timing comes in to play.

Timing is rather essential especially when raiding a region that either has an active delegate or has an active founder (regions with founders work differently). Instead of, as common sense would dictate, your endorsement counting instantly, NationStates uses “update times,” that are divided thus:

·         Major Update (12AM EST - 1AM EST)

·         Minor Update (12PM EST - 1PM EST)

Each region has a particular update time, for example 12:43 and minor and major updates (such as issues being resolved or endorsement counts being updated) will generally occur within a minute or so of that time.

Which makes Timing very essential - You and your friends, if timed right, can hop into the region seconds before it updates already endorsed (We will cover cross-endo'ing later), and be delegate before the defending delegate can even refresh. This is essential to Raiding.

Jump points\Triggering?

So how does raiding/defending fit into this?

At update, WA endorsements are refreshed, and the delegate position either changes to a new delegate/no delegate, or no delegate/the current delegate stays in power.

Raiders

So, how does one raid?

There are multiple ways to raid. One method is to go into a region, pretend to be a native, and then take over the region. It’s, in other words, a Coup d’état. Another, more widely used method, is to raid at update, with quick, lighting strikes on regions, using 2+ people. This usually occurs every update, which meansmuch shenanigans ensuing. They usually edit the WFE, make embassies with their home region, and suppress messages. This is called tagging, and probably one of the easier methods of raiding. The final one is, at update, raiders all move in at once, and take over a region. They occupy the region, have a bit of fun, and either destroy the region, or leave.

How do I find a raider organization?

There are a few out there, at the time, and the following are completely raider, raid sometimes, or at least align themselves as raider. To find these regions, go to the World, click on the regions tag (the one that is green and says "[insert number here] regions'. Once there, click on the "Invader" tag, which will be below the "Find a region" box, and find a raider region to enjoy!

Defenders

Defenders do a few things.

-Attempt to stop tag raids, with success varying night to night.

-Attempt to liberate taken over regions.

-And detag regions.

Detagging, what is that?

It’s where defenders go to a region, and put the region back in its original place (WFE, embassy, ban list, and message wise)

Is there any guide to defending?

As far as I know, no, it’s a hand’s on learning job.

How do they stop them?

If defenders see raider setup before update, they generally call others to come and help. They try and move very fast with the raiders, to try and stop tag raids/occupations.

Do they ever win?

Sometimes, they do, sometimes, they don’t. It’s the same for the raiders, it really depends on who is helping, how fast you are, and how many people you have.

How do I find these regions??

Do the same for what is said on how to find raider organizations, but instead click on the "Defender" tag, and find a region you enjoy!

There are major raider and defender regions and\or organizations that you can learn more about in section [...].

So, what’s the point of it all?

There rarely is, most just do it for fun. Some, like to push their political policies on others, others for their beliefs.

However, many R\D people are intense and can scare the newcomer with their “zeal, passion, burning enthusiasm.”  So tread carefully and if you’re really interested in military gameplay try a few different things out.

For example, the NSA Army in the South Pacific goes on missions that include both raiding and defending!
