Calorie posting on Menus
#1
Calorie posting is supposed to help people make healthier eating choices, but study of fast food joints in poor New York neighborhoods saw customers eating more calories after the calories went up on the sign.

<a class='bbc_url' href='http://www.nytimes.com/2009/10/06/nyregion/06calories.html?_r=1&scp=1&sq=mcdonald%27s%20calories%20new%20york&st=cse'>Via NYTimes</a>

I suppose people's hunger will always switch them to what will fill them up. it's natural.

I dislike that it was just poor neighbourhoods, how about the richer neighbourhoods? do they see the same switch?

Quote:This study focused primarily on poor black and Hispanic fast-food customers in the South Bronx, central Brooklyn, Harlem, Washington Heights and the Rockaways in Queens, and used a similar population in Newark, which does not have a calorie posting law, as a control group. The locations were chosen because of a high proportion of obesity and diabetes among poor minority populations.

I think calorie posting works only for people who a) pay attention to it and b) know what it means.

Actually I'm just curious to see the calories on the Double Down Sandwich from Kentucky Fried Chicken or that hambruger made with a bun of a Krispie Kream doughnut.

I think its about the same number of calories one would expend if swimming from New York to Sydney.

Working in an NYC restaurant, I'd had various people say "OMG I can't have that, look at the calories!" Of course, it's a minority neighborhood, but not incredibly poor.

Also though, I remember a few years ago when Ruby Tuesday did it voluntarily. It's a real kill joy if you're not prepared for it.

Despite the guy's goofy looks, it sounds like he has the right attitude in life. To me it is nice to see passion in anything constructive.

i agree, the study should probably have shown what happened in rich neighborhoods. maybe education had something to do with these choices, or lack of education.

i usually avoid eating at fast food places. mostly because i'd rather just cook myself a meal. i dunno if that's any healthier, but it usually tastes better.
