Names and politics
#1
I just thought that the problem of lack of choice in US politics might be related to the names of the major parties. There's the Republican party. Apparently it felt the need to call itself at that way at some time because to discern itself from other parties who were not quite as republic-minded. At the moment, this is not quite the case, though. I don't think there's a significant fraction among the American voters who want to turn the country into monarchy or a tribal structure.

On the other hand, there's Democratic party. Especially in the US, people already vote on everything and anything (as far as I know), and I sincerely doubt that there is a significant number of people who do not want that, and want to take voting powers away from the people.

So basically you have two parties, who by their names alone both convey the same message: "We want to keep everything as it is, vote for us".
